Am I the only one who doesn’t lose sleep over the environment?

Lets be honest…how many of you go to bed each night worrying about all the carbon emissions you put in the air as you drove to work, errands, heating your home, you know…the things that make day to day life possible? Even IF this global warming is a man made creation…Never mind that you’re an infantecimal part of a global trend. Worse case scenario, you’d just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. And even if you DO decide to step out of the line and “go green” the guy that was behind you will still be the tipping point. You just decided to make your life a bigger pain in the ass in the meantime, before the whole world spirals out of control. Although you will be entitled to preach how you are holier than thou, while we all burn a fiery death.

Welp, sorry. I’m not going to buy into the status of it all. Like somehow making it known that I spend more money than a person has to just to reduce my carbon footprint makes me less of a narcissist. And don’t give me the “what about the children crap?” My children won’t care because they won’t know any better. You know there was a time when jet contrails didn’t criss cross they sky 365 days a year. What about that unspoiled beauty that I missed out on? Thanks a lot baby boomers.

But no matter how much I say, I can’t say it as well as C. Montgomery Burns:

“Oooh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys! Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she’s losing! Well I say, hard cheese”

  1. This is one of the many, many cases where ignorance has utility. I can’t do much to stop global warming, but I can do plenty to ignore it and not worry myself into a coma before I drown in melted glacier water.

Apparently the two most common points of view on global warming, ferociously held, are these:

    1. The earth is warming up.
    2. The earth is warming up.

A few people have figured out that the only real question is whether people can or should do anything to try and slow the warming. Meanwhile, everyone else is counting icebergs and polar bears and imagining they are contributing to the debate.

If the warming is going to threaten life as we know it, the only important questions are these:

    1. Are we sure global warming will cause more bad than good?
    2. Realistically, can we do anything to stop it?
    3. Would the costs of stopping it be more or less than the benefits?

I’m fairly certain the answer to all three questions is “Beats the shit out of me.”

    1. The earth is getting warmer, and human activity is an important part of it. I base this conclusion on the lack of credible peer reviewed work to the contrary and the mountain of work that confirms human-induced warming. While individual studies might be wrong, it’s extremely unlikely the entire field has been so thoroughly duped.

    2. There is plenty of bullshit on both sides of the issue. The people arguing that humans are not causing relatively rapid rises in temperatures are under-informed, misinformed, or suffering from bad thinking and bad analogies.

    3. The people who are well-informed about global warming are overstating the case by conflating the well-studied fact of human-created warming with the less-than-certain predictions of what happens because of the extra warming. And there’s a tendency to leave out the “why I might be wrong” parts of the argument. I call that bullshit.

  2. I’ll try not to rant….

What really gets me peeved is those friggin’ commercials on driving hybrid autos. Yeah, it’ll make a difference. YAHDAA-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH!!! My personal favorite is the kid who asks her dad to drop her off a block away so all the other kids won’t see her in non-hybrid.

Take a trip and stop in all these big-ass truck stops. Just walk through their semi parking lots and see 200 semis parked and running, or at least their generators going full steam, most with reefer engines running also. These semis run, at the least, 24 hours a day for 5 days out of the week! Then tell me my little Dodge Stratus is killing us all. Better yet, tell me to spend money, money that is hard to find for the majority of the population, on a friggin’ hybrid car just so I save a little money on gas and the rest of the world thinks I’m doing some big-assed favor for the environment?!?!

Damn, and I said I wouldn’t rant! My bad!
